Photos from series “Love, Joy, Freedom, Expression”

By Ashe West-Lewis PZ ’26

Artist’s Note: I created these images for my Intermediate Photography class at Pitzer, focusing on a self-purposed research question surrounding anything that we liked. As a queer artist, I am drawn towards representing the lives, expressions, and emotions of my community. Wanting to get in touch with my identity and those of my peers, I thought of no better models for a spontaneous photoshoot than my gorgeous friends. They asked what they should wear and I said, “Bring a few options!” They asked me how to pose and I said, “Do what makes you feel comfortable.” I wanted to focus on their joy and freedom, as queer voices are often silences and undermined. We played music, danced and laughed, and I hope you, too, can feel the freedom.
